Description
A creamy, crunchy, and nostalgic Green Bean Casserole made with tender green beans, a rich homemade mushroom sauce, and a golden crown of crispy fried onions. Perfect for holidays or any cozy weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed and cut
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
1 small onion or shallot, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
3 tbsp butter or olive oil
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups milk or half-and-half
1–2 tsp soy sauce or Worcestershire
1½–2 cups crispy fried onions
Salt and black pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish
2. Blanch green beans 4–5 minutes, then shock in ice water
3. Sauté onions in butter until soft, then add mushrooms and cook until browned
4. Add garlic and stir briefly
5. Sprinkle flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux
6. Slowly whisk in milk, simmer until thick and creamy
7. Season with salt, pepper, and soy sauce/Worcestershire
8. Combine beans, sauce, and 1/2 cup crispy onions in baking dish
9. Bake 20–25 minutes until hot and bubbling
10. Top with remaining onions and bake 8–10 minutes until golden
Notes
Use fresh, frozen, or canned beans depending on texture preference
Make sauce ahead and assemble casserole just before baking
Add cheese (Gruyère or Parmesan) for a gourmet twist
For gluten-free, use GF flour and GF crispy onions
For vegan, use plant milk and vegan crispy onions
